The workshop "The Blue Sector at the Crossroad - Moving Aquaculture Into More Sustainable Waters" took place from 15th to 16th January. The workshop was jointly organized by the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) and the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB).
In view of growing global demand for protein, fresh water and marine aquacultures will play an increasingly important role. In order to unfold its potential to enhance global food security and nutrition, aquaculture must find ways to increase production output while lowering environmental impacts at the same time. The objectives of this Workshop are to discuss how the exploitation of aquatic resources can be sustainably intensified and to foster interdisciplinary exchange for innovative research ideas.
Three focus groups were formed within the workshop:
- Land-based recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS), Aquaponics, pond and flow through systems
- Integrated multitropic aquaculture (IMTA). Paving the way towards community and ecosystem based aquaculture in the tropics
- Linking aquaculture with the SDGs
The main focus of the discussion were the potentials and challenge of the different aquacultures. In addition, the focus groups developed specific research questions and new research approaches. In total 13 different Institutions partcipated in the workshop. This enabled an interdisciplinary exchange between different Leibniz institutes and related organizations (NGO‘s).
