Nutrition and health apps, sensors and social  media in the nutritional context are playing an increasingly important role in society. Dr. Doreen Burdack from the Leibniz Research Association "Sustainable Food Production and Healthy Nutrition" met with representatives of the four nutrition clusters on 7/8 October 2019 for the "Cross-cluster Workshop on Apps in Nutrition" (the four nutrition clusters being: enable,  NutriAct,  nutriCARD  and  Diet Body Brain initiated and funded by the BMBF), where she presented the work of their project "Digitalization & Nutrition". The status quo, trends and expectations for digitalisation in nutrition were addressed. Potentials for a healthier and more sustainable diet as well as transparency along the value chain were presented. Together with scientists and app developers, Dr. Burdack discussed the opportunities and risks of digitalisation in nutrition and agriculture. It was agreed that there should be closer cooperation between politics, business and science; early involvement of future users; interdisciplinary research alliances and application-oriented research funding are needed to provide trusted and reliable digital solutions to promote public health and more sustainable consumption.
